Secondary Education: Grades 8-12
While traditional certification at the secondary level as a part of the undergraduate degree no longer exists at Texas A&M, the Department offers a teaching field plan of 27 hours of English, linguistics, and reading coursework. When combined with courses offered by the College of Education, this field plan prepares students for admission to the Texas A&M post-baccaluareate certification program or other programs offered by some colleges, educational service centers, or independent school districts. Please note that students must graduate with a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPR in order to obtain a teaching certificate.
Post-Baccalaureate OPT II Teacher Certification in English: Language Arts/ Reading
Students headed for the post-baccalaureate program will complete a 27-hour plan and nine hours of professional education coursework. All hours should fit the B.A. degree plan if the student declares his/her interest upon entering the major. A second teaching field (subject) of usually 24-30 hours may be added to make the candidate more viable in the job market. A second teaching field may cause the total hours for the degree to exceed the 120 hours required for the English degree.
